Solid Wood Care

  • Clean surfaces using a soft cloth dampened with water
  • Avoid using wax and/or silicone-based cleaners or polished
  • Use padding to help protect the wood and finish. Hot and cold items should not be placed directly onto surfaces
  • Spills should be wiped clean as quickly as possible
  • Store table leaves flat in the same room
  • Avoid placing furniture in close proximity to heaters and fireplaces

Organic solid wood products will consistently balance themselves with their local environmental conditions. To avoid excessive warping or cracking issues, maintain an environment at or around 70º Fahrenheit with relative humidity between 40% to 50%. Proper ventilation and air current is recommended for all solid wood products. Any adjustment to room temperature should be made gradually. Drastic changes to environmental conditions are extremely stressful to wood in general. Excess heat and dryness can cause potential cracking and/or splitting. Using a humidifier is a great tool to protect your solid wood investment. Product should be kept away from direct heat sources such a fireplace, in-floor heating, etc.

Solid wood will expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. This movement is normal and appears as “checking” (small surface cracks) and does not affect the structural integrity of this piece. Wood and lacquers will naturally darken (or amber) over time. To help minimize this effect, furniture should not be exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. If direct sunlight cannot be avoided, it is recommended to rotate the piece(s) periodically to even exposure.

The beauty of furniture care is that it helps to protect your investment. Fine furniture is an important purchase. Proper care will help maintain your furniture’s finish and ensure that it looks great year after year.

Fabric Care

Each fabric has a cleaning code which is assigned by the textile manufacturer. These are industry standard codes used by all upholsterers and textile mills. They can be found on the white tags beneath the seat cushions of your Smith Brothers furniture. They are also used by spot cleaning agent manufacturers and appear on the labels of their products.

S – Clean with pure Petroleum Distillate-Based Solvents only. Water-based or detergent-based cleaners may cause excessive shrinkage. Water stains may become permanent. SW – Clean with either water-based cleaning agents, foam, or pure Petroleum Distillate-Based solvents.

W – Clean with water-based cleaning agents or foam to remove overall soil. (Note: Many household cleaners are harmful to the color and life of a fabric.)

X – Do not clean. Only lightly vacuum.

Leather Care

Leather care varies greatly depending on the type of leather that you have. Please contact us to get in-depth information on the type of leather you received. In general, though, follow these rules if something gets spilled on your leather.

  1. Soak up any liquids immediately with a clean, white cloth.
  2. Using a clean, white cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, gently dab away any crumbs or residue. Avoid harsh scrubbing.
  3. Dry with a clean, white cloth.
  4. Repeat if necessary. Remember that stains on Pure Aniline leather will eventually dissipate into the grain structure and lessen in appearance over time.
  5. For stubborn stains, contact a local upholstery cleaning professional or a leather technician.

Stressless Leather Care

Stressless offers leather care kits specific to their products. Here are some tips they recommend to keep your leather furniture in the best condition.

  • In order to avoid stubborn stains, protect your leather when using household chemicals e.g. window cleaners, bleach, nail polish, nail polish remover, glue, shoe polish, paint, or corrosive materials, avoid domestic detergents and ALL products containing solvents and oils, as they may destroy your leather surface. Do not use any traditional household products to remove stubborn stains. Many of these are harsh and cannot be guaranteed safe for use on leather. Do not use a steamer to clean the leather.

  • Certain cosmetics and body care products contain solvents and oils. These products are not beneficial to leather, as they may weaken the leather finish over time. Avoid using your leather furniture with wet hair or with freshly applied hair care products or cosmetics. To avoid the build-up of these products, please clean the leather regularly as described.
  • Some of the leather dyes have a two-tone color effect (shadow/antique effect). Leather dyed with a two-tone effect may change character faster and wear more unevenly than leather with just one color. This applies in particular to areas of the furniture such as
  • The top layer protects the leather and simplifies cleaning, but is nonetheless vulnerable to soiling and wear. If the top layer/top color is destroyed, the leather may deteriorate more quickly. Penetrating spills/damage/scratches are normally irreparable and may result in the top color changing character, cracking or peeling off.
  • Denim clothes and hard textiles such as blue jeans expose the leather to strong wear and may leave color on the leather that is difficult to remove without risking the destruction of the top color of the leather. Light leather colors in particular are vulnerable to such color contamination.

Maintenance Advice:

  • Maintain surface appearance and texture by gently wiping your leather once a week with a clean dry cloth or vacuum with a soft brush. This will remove dust.
  • We recommend that your leather furniture is cleaned and re-protected at least every six months.

Mattress Care

Carrying or moving the mattress

  • When possible, two people should carry the mattress flat on its side to reduce the possibility of the mattress becoming damaged. Bending a mattress may damage the innerspring unit; however, flexing the mattress through doorways should not harm it. For Reserve Collection models, three people may be needed to carry the mattress.

Cleaning the mattress

  • To keep the mattress clean, we recommend that you use a protective mattress pad. Vacuuming is the only recommended cleaning method. To clean a stain, use a mild soap with cold water and apply lightly, being careful not to soak the mattress or foundation. Dry cleaning fluids may damage some of the materials in the mattress.
